The safety eyes sit a few inches above the floor in both corners of the opening, which is exactly where bikes, trash bins, mops and rainwater find them. A bracket gets nudged out of line, a lens fogs over in humid weather, or the thin wire gets nicked at a staple. Storm season adds another cause: a power flicker can leave the opener, the keypad and the remotes out of step with each other.

Sometimes the controls are innocent. A door that binds on a bent track or a dragging roller makes the opener hit its force limit and reverse, which looks exactly like a sensor fault from the driveway. If that is what is happening, the fix is cable and roller repair or off-track repair, and a maintenance tune-up keeps it from coming back.
One safety point matters more than all of this: never disable, bypass or tape over the safety eyes to force a door shut, and do not hold the wall button down to override a reversal.
