What the Springs Actually Do
A garage door weighs a great deal more than most people expect. The opener does not lift that weight; the springs do. The opener's job is only to push a balanced door along its track and hold it in place. That is why a spring failure feels like an opener failure: the motor runs, strains and gives up, because it has suddenly been asked to do a job it was never built for.
There are two ways of storing that lifting force. A torsion system uses one or two springs wound around a steel shaft mounted above the opening, with cables running from drums at each end down to the bottom of the door. An extension system uses a long spring stretched along each horizontal track, working against pulleys. Both hold enough energy to injure someone badly, which is why neither is a do-it-yourself part.
How to Tell Which One You Have
Stand well back from the opening with the door closed and look above it. A horizontal bar running across the header with one or two coils wrapped around it is a torsion system. If the space above the door is empty and you instead see long springs running back along the tracks on either side, parallel to the ceiling, that is an extension system.
You can note this from the driveway. You do not need to stand under the door, climb a ladder beside a spring or touch anything, and you should not. The point of identifying the system is simply to describe it accurately when you call, so the right parts come out with the technician.
Why the Difference Matters
Torsion systems are what most newer doors in this area use. They control the door more evenly, wear more predictably and cope better with the wide double and triple openings common on homes built here since the 1990s. When a torsion spring breaks, it usually breaks with an audible bang and leaves a visible gap in the coil, and the door becomes far too heavy to lift.
Extension systems are more often found on older doors and lighter single openings. They cost less to fit but are harder to keep balanced, and a failure is less contained: without a containment cable threaded through the spring, a break can throw parts across the garage. If your door uses extension springs and there are no safety cables running through them, that is worth having addressed at the next service.
What a Correct Replacement Looks Like
A spring is not a generic part. The correct replacement is matched to the door's weight, height and drum size, and to the cycle life you want from it. Two coils that look identical on a shelf can be rated completely differently, and fitting the wrong one leaves the door either too heavy to hold position or so light it fights the opener on the way down.
On a double door with two torsion springs, both are normally replaced together. They have done the same work for the same number of years, so leaving an old spring beside a new one puts the door back out of balance within months. A good technician will also check the cables, drums, bearings and end plates while the system is apart, because the same corrosion that shortened the spring's life has been working on everything around it.
Converting From One System to the Other
Converting an extension setup to torsion is sometimes a genuine improvement, particularly on a wide door with limited control. It needs adequate headroom, a properly specified shaft and springs, and solid mounting into the header. It should be recommended because of what it solves at that particular garage, not sold as an automatic upgrade. Ask what problem the conversion fixes, and what a straightforward repair would achieve instead.

Two things shape spring life locally. The first is door size: wide double and triple garages are the standard here, and a heavy insulated double door works its springs hard. The second is humidity. Garages stay closed and damp for most of the day, condensation settles on steel, and a lightly rusted spring fails earlier than its cycle rating suggests. It is the same reason cables and roller stems corrode from the inside out.
Homes across Cinco Ranch that were built in the community's early phases are a good example: many are still running their original hardware, and springs are usually the first thing to go. If a technician is already replacing them, that is the moment to ask about a higher-cycle set rather than another standard pair.
